Use a pry bar and circular saw (set to the depth of the decking) to remove old floorboards. to expose the joists to expose structural members—without damaging the ledger board or the rim joists. Once exposed, inspect the joists for "soft spots" or fungal decay. Any joist with significant rot must be "sistered. and or replaced entirely. Before repairing posts or joists, the weight of the porch roof will be transferred off the existing supports. a Temporary Header: Secure a heavy-duty 4 x 4 or 4 x 6 beam horizontally against the porch ceiling rafters. to support the temporary header. It will be slowly engaged to take the tension off the permanent posts. Post (Base)Repair. The bottom of a porch post that has decayed will be removed and replaced with a new piece of matching timber using structural wood screws and waterproof wood glue before lowering the porch back onto the new base.
