Work described
From the filingThe proposed project consists of the removal of a non-original addition, construction of new foundations, and a new addition to the existing single-family residence located at 134 Water Street in Guilford, Connecticut. The original portion of the house was constructed in the early 19th century and will be preserved and incorporated into the overall design. Due to the property’s location within a FEMA AE flood zone (Base Flood Elevation 10’), the project includes raising the existing structure to improve flood resiliency and bring the first-floor elevation into compliance with current floodplain requirements. Work proposed within the setback is limited to improvements necessary to meet FEMA requirements and the Guilford Floodplain Ordinance. The existing historic stone foundation will be partially retained and repurposed on site as a landscape retaining wall where feasible. A new addition will be constructed at the rear of the house. The first floor of the addition will include a mudroom and kitchen. The second floor will include a new primary bedroom and bathroom. The design intent is to preserve the historic character and scale of the original house while improving functionality, flood resiliency, and long-term livability.
